0 My Domincan Salon Visit And A Length Check

I recently made a trip to a local Dominican hair salon for a blow out & flat iron on my natural hair. My experience at this hair salon (Diva Latinas in Charleston, SC) reminded me of why I used to like going to salons AND why I prefer to do my natural hair myself. Here is a quick recap of my natural hair salon experience.

Negatives:

  • Very rough while detangling. It was obvious that they did not like doing my kinky hair.
  • Rude. Spoke in Spanish to each other while every client in the salon only spoke English.
  • Old dirty products. I'm glad I brought my own!
  • Loud Spanish music. For the cost, I thought the loud music was very unprofessional.
  • Knew nothing about hair health. Gave no tips on how to maintain healthy kinky/curly hair and even told me to keep coming back so she could loosen my curls.
  • They charge more depending on the length and texture of your hair. I had to pay double price.
  • You don't know the price until they see and feel your hair.
Positives:
  • Quick. I was in and out in about an hour.
  • No upselling. They didn't offer me any extra services. They didn't try to get extra money out of me.
  • They allowed me to bring my own products for them to use.
  • They gave me a trim and trimmed off only what was needed. (like a 1/4 inch all around)
  • My hair came out beautiful! My hair has NEVER been this straight.
Would I go back? To this particular salon, no I will not. Though I went at the advisement of a friend, I don't think her experiences are much different than mine.

Here are the results:

Here is a comparison of my hair from November 2011- 8 months ago:

As for my hair length; I don't think I will concentrate on growing it any longer. I am fairly tall at 5'8-ish and this just feels like enough hair for me. My hair is right at the tip of waist-length.

After this salon visit, I am so thankful I can do my hair myself. If I had to deal with other people doing my hair often, I would cut it all off. I have had  my hair professionally done twice while natural and neither of them seemed too pleased to deal with kinky/curly hair which resulted in them being way too rough.

Hope you like the pictures! Please be careful going to these salons guys, people can and will take advantage of you! I had to give the girl detangling my hair the "comb my hair hard again and see what I do to you" face more than once. I'd hate for any of you to think you have to let someone roughen up your hair to get a nice style, you don't.

Overall my hair is very healthy. The hair stylist even commented on the health of my hair and how I should keep it chemical free. I will admit, my hair is a lot healthier than I thought it was. She cut off very little and my hair feels awesome!

0 Weekly Natural Hair Regimen & Style May 19-25

May 25, 2011 Length Check BSL- My arm was about to snap off my shoulder!

This weeks natural hair wash & set routine:

May 19, 2011 (Thursday)

Detangling Conditioner- White Rain Tropical Coconut- This conditioner really helps me detangle my hair quickly. I detangle section by section and then twist each section. I end up with about 10 twists. I wash my hair with the 2 strand twists. This helps keep the drain from clogging and helps me wash my hair quicker.

Shampoo- Washed hair with bentonite clay shampoo bar - I needed to get rid of some buildup from using "Yes To Carrots" conditioner, which contains dimethicone. Great shampoo bar for the heavy duty cleansing jobs since it contains bentonite clay, which is awesome for getting rid of dirt, grime and buildup.

Rinse-Out Conditioner- "Yes to Tomatoes" (does not contain cones) I really enjoy using this conditioner. It's the perfect moisturizing conditioner with a bit of protein. I bought my bottle in January and I'm just now reaching the half way point and I use it almost every week. I haven't picked up my Giovanni Smooth as Silk in about a month!

I T-shirt dried my hair with a cotton shirt and then on damp hair I applied:

Leave-In conditioner-Hydrating Body & Hair Milk- I applied a quarter sized amount to each untwisted section.

Sealant- DIY Whipped Body & Hair Butter- I sealed each section with a small amount of hair butter.

I ran my Denman brush through the section of curls to help distribute product and I braided each section into two plaits for a braid out!

Braids were taken down on Saturday May 21,2011 for a braidout!

The results:

Sunday May 22,2011 Braidout
I was holding my mouth like I was hungry...had to blur that out!

Tuesday May 24, 2011

I did a light shampoo (barely had any soap on my hands) with the Lavender Shampoo Bar and conditioned with "Yes To Tomatoes". My non-detangled hair was in about 8 random twists. I just grabbed my hair (still defined by the braid-out by the way) and twisted. I washed with the twists in. I did not apply a leave-in or any other products to my hair. I just slapped my scarf on and went to bed with damp barely t-shirt dried hair...

When I woke up the twists were still a bit damp so I barely had any definition.

The results:

Back View

My hair feels nice and moisturized. I think I will detangle on Friday night and do a deep condition. This weather has my hair going through the motions...

Hope this helps you all to see how simple I keep it with my regimen! I got a trim at the beginning of April (she cut about 1-2 inches off) and I'm still BSL (bra strap length) at the longest layer. So, this should prove that to achieve longer hair, you don't need to have a difficult, product filled regimen. Keep it simple!

I want to see your regimen! Link to your weekly regimen in the comment section! Thanks!
