0 Question and Answer: Dry Scalp Solutions

Question: My hair is DRY I have a DRY SCALP THAT FLAKES. My hair is damaged I dont know what to do it doesnt grow at all. Do u suggest the combination of oils with the shea butter or should I specifically use one type of oil or what? I used vitamin e oil and it did wonders to my hair? Could I mix this with the Shea butter? Any suggestions?

DIY Answer: I used to have issues with a dry flaky scalp, co-washing helped. Co-washing is when you wash your hair with just conditioner throughout the week. I would do this every morning and then wet bun my hair. A dry scalp needs moisture and there are many ways to keep it moisturized such as:

  • Spritzing your scalp with a water and essential oil mix. Since your scalp is also itchy, try peppermint for growth or tea tree to help with the itching. Both are relatively inexpensive oils that you can get from many health food stores like WholeFoods or The Vitamin Shoppe. Just add water and few drops of oil to a spray bottle and spritz your scalp as needed.
  • Co-washing as mentioned above, just use a cheap conditioner. I have used and like White Rain Tropical Coconut ($1 from Dollar Tree), Giovanni Tea Tree Triple Treat (from Target, Wal-Mart & Whole Foods - $7).
  • You can do water rinses, where you just rinse your hair & scalp with only water each morning.
These are what helped me with my scalp issues. I also make sure to wash my hair atleast once a week. Be mindful of the shampoo you use as some shampoos can dry out your scalp.

You can mix shea butter with vitamin E oil.

Let me know if any of these tips help! If anyone else has any answers please put them in the comment box!

If anyone else has any questions, feel free to ask and I will answer your question the best way I can!

0 Guest Post: What is the baggy method?

Thanks to Her Best Hair for letting me repost this awesome article on:

"How to Baggy for More Moisturized Hair"

The baggy method is exactly how it sounds an hair care method that includes a bag. The options for the baggy method include a full head baggy method, sometimes referred to as the Greenhouse Effect, or the ponytail only baggy method.

The overall purpose of the baggy method is to promote hair growth by locking in moisture. When baggying your ends only, after moisturizing them, length retention is promoted because the ends are not breaking and splitting due to dryness.

There is a difference between the baggy method and the greenhouse effect. The baggy method typically requires you to use a moisturizer whereas the greenhouse effect encourages your body heat and natural oils to moisturize your hair.

I have not tried the greenhouse effect but I have done the baggy method when my hair was extremely dry. It gave me immediate moisture but the results are temporary. When dealing with cases of extreme dryness I  would highly recommend regular conditioning with a moisturizing conditioner.

In simple terms, how do you do the baggy method?
On hair that has been washed and conditioned you can apply a leave-in or additional moisturizer of your choice, put on a shower cap, and then secure into place with an elastic headband.
On dry hair, apply a moisturizer (or conditioner), put on a shower cap/plastic cap, and then secure into place with an elastic headband.
The length of time that you choose to baggy is up to you just keep in mind that too much of a good thing can be harmful.

0 Today's Natural Hair- Blown Out/ Braid Out

Saturday night was wash night and I honestly (don't judge me) didn't feel like dealing with my curls for the week. My hair has been trying to adjust to this hot weather but, it's getting on my nerves. My hair is the opposite of most others, it hates summertime and love wintertime. You would think my hair would love the humid air and wash n gos, co-washes, etc. but, it just dries out and acts all wonky...but anyway.

I decided to blow my hair out and try a loose braid out. I did six braids and left them in from Saturday night until Monday morning.

Products Used-
Lavender Shampoo Bar & A Fresh Start Shampoo Bar (coming soon)
Yes To Tomatoes Conditioner
Giovanni Smooth as Silk mixed with Olive Oil Conditioner
Olive Oil as a leave in
DIY Shea Avocado Whipped Body & Hair Butter for braiding & sealing

The results:

After I went out and the humidity hit it:

I hope ya'll enjoy the pictures!

I love my big hair!!! It feels soft and I am loving the break from my curls/kinks for a moment... I plan to do 2  plaits in my hair tonight and do another braid out tomorrow.

How did you wear your hair today? Do you like big hair?

Thanks for reading!

0 5 Hair Care Mistakes Most Naturals Make

I'm just going to lay it out for you all, a lot of the information in the natural hair community can be questionable and have you walking in circles with your hair. Often when you're newly natural, it can be hard know what is meat and what is bones. Here are 5 hair care mistakes you don't want to make.

1. Joining Bandwagons- What's a bandwagon? It's going out and trying techniques and new hair tools just because others are doing it. Every month there is a new bandwagon; co-washing, no-poo, baggying, Tangle Teezer, and others are all bandwagons. While these techniques can be beneficial; if what you're doing isn't broken don't try to fix it. Try only following techniques that solve a problem you currently have with your hair.

2.Hair Typing- Yes, it's nice to feel like you're a part of a group but honestly, hair typing is purely aesthetic. Yes your curls can look like someone elses but, it takes more than knowing your hair type to really figure out what your hair likes and doesn't like. You can learn a lot from people who don't have the same hair type as you do.

3. Throwing Away Products That Work- Don't go and throwaway that "tried and true" leave-in just because, you've now learned about mineral oil. Trust me, when you're having a bad hair day, you're going to be looking for that tried and true product. Again, if it isn't broken don't fix it.

4. Black People, Black Hair, Black Products- Please, kick this notion to the curb. You may have more in common hairwise with someone who is not the same color as you and actually learn some great tips from other curlies. Lots of natural hair ladies use Dove, Suave, Loreal, Aussie Moist, Garnier Fructis, with much success and these aren't marketed for "black hair". Just find products that solve the problems you're facing with your hair.

5. Natural Is Easy As 1-2-3- No, natural hair doesn't have to be difficult but, we all have our days. Don't go natural thinking that you won't have any bad hair days or even months! Natural hair has it's learning curves.

By keeping the 5 tips above in mind while on your journey it will save you a lot of frustration, there's is nothing like experiencing excessive breakage or slit ends and having no idea where they came from and how to stop them. If you keep your regimen consistent, you will get consistent results.

0 Natural Hair Question & Answer- Homemade Leave-In Hair Sprays

Question: So, I was wondering if you have any tips or info on homemade leave in spray conditioners i can make myself ?

DIY Hair Care Answer: There are plenty! Vegetable Glycerin (can be found at a health food store) and water is great, ratio 4:1 (glycerin is 1), honey, olive oil and water is another (3 equal parts or less oil if it feels oily), water & aloe vera juice (equal parts), castor oil & water. There are some tea rinses you can do in the shower with black tea & green tea; these work great if you want to get out of the shower and go. Adjust the recipes to your liking, make sure you use enough water or else the castor & veg glycerin can be sticky. Spritzing your hair with these right after a shower or while in the shower will give your hair an instant steam treatment b/c they will soak up the water in the air and make your hair soft!

0 Weekly Natural Hair Regimen & Style May 19-25

May 25, 2011 Length Check BSL- My arm was about to snap off my shoulder!

This weeks natural hair wash & set routine:

May 19, 2011 (Thursday)

Detangling Conditioner- White Rain Tropical Coconut- This conditioner really helps me detangle my hair quickly. I detangle section by section and then twist each section. I end up with about 10 twists. I wash my hair with the 2 strand twists. This helps keep the drain from clogging and helps me wash my hair quicker.

Shampoo- Washed hair with bentonite clay shampoo bar - I needed to get rid of some buildup from using "Yes To Carrots" conditioner, which contains dimethicone. Great shampoo bar for the heavy duty cleansing jobs since it contains bentonite clay, which is awesome for getting rid of dirt, grime and buildup.

Rinse-Out Conditioner- "Yes to Tomatoes" (does not contain cones) I really enjoy using this conditioner. It's the perfect moisturizing conditioner with a bit of protein. I bought my bottle in January and I'm just now reaching the half way point and I use it almost every week. I haven't picked up my Giovanni Smooth as Silk in about a month!

I T-shirt dried my hair with a cotton shirt and then on damp hair I applied:

Leave-In conditioner-Hydrating Body & Hair Milk- I applied a quarter sized amount to each untwisted section.

Sealant- DIY Whipped Body & Hair Butter- I sealed each section with a small amount of hair butter.

I ran my Denman brush through the section of curls to help distribute product and I braided each section into two plaits for a braid out!

Braids were taken down on Saturday May 21,2011 for a braidout!

The results:

Sunday May 22,2011 Braidout
I was holding my mouth like I was hungry...had to blur that out!

Tuesday May 24, 2011

I did a light shampoo (barely had any soap on my hands) with the Lavender Shampoo Bar and conditioned with "Yes To Tomatoes". My non-detangled hair was in about 8 random twists. I just grabbed my hair (still defined by the braid-out by the way) and twisted. I washed with the twists in. I did not apply a leave-in or any other products to my hair. I just slapped my scarf on and went to bed with damp barely t-shirt dried hair...

When I woke up the twists were still a bit damp so I barely had any definition.

The results:

Wednesday May 25, 2011

Back View

My hair feels nice and moisturized. I think I will detangle on Friday night and do a deep condition. This weather has my hair going through the motions...

Hope this helps you all to see how simple I keep it with my regimen! I got a trim at the beginning of April (she cut about 1-2 inches off) and I'm still BSL (bra strap length) at the longest layer. So, this should prove that to achieve longer hair, you don't need to have a difficult, product filled regimen. Keep it simple!

I want to see your regimen! Link to your weekly regimen in the comment section! Thanks!

0 What's up with natural hair ladies using natural hair care products?

I was watching a YouTube video and the Vlogger was going a review of a natural hair care company and while she was describing the company she said "So this is great for all you naturals who are into natural products." and she had a little smirk on her face when she said it. She wasn't/isn't the first vlogger/blogger to refer to a natural hair woman liking natural hair products this way. I think a lot of people just don't know much about natural products and how beneficial they are to our hair and bodies. Although, this should be basic science like knowing fruits and veggies are healthy...but, I digress.

Just to be clear, when I say natural hair care products, I am speaking of natural ingredients, not so much natural hair companies.

Are natural products better for your hair?

Anything from the earth is better than anything synthetic or man-made. Hands down. The vitamins and minerals from the earth will always surpass man-made medicine. This is scientifically proven, Google it. So, while a product full of synthetic chemicals can help maintain healthy hair, there is almost always a natural alternative that will have the same effect. This is not to say synthetic products are harmful (I use synthetic ingredients all that time) but, we have to keep this in prospective and admit synthetic is no match for natural.

Is there a way to use natural hair care products on a budget?

Yes, whether you want to make your own natural hair care products or buy ready-made products. You don't have to buy a specific product just because it's natural and handmade; shop around. See who has similar products within your price range. If your budget is $3 a product, then look for natural ingredients. Many natural ingredients, serve multiple purposes.

Shampoo- If you already use an all natural soap, try it in your hair and see how your hair responds. Soaps & shampoos are very similar and the main goal of both products is to clean off dirt and grime. WholeFoods, sells a store brand of body soap for if I remember correctly $5-6 for 8 oz.. If you use it for your hair and skin that averages out to $2-3 for a shampoo and bar soap.Just find a bar that fits your needs.

Conditioner- There are a plethora of recipes online for conditioning treatments using ingredients from the grocery store. Honey rinses, oils rinses (with olive oil or coconut oil), or even using yogurt. These are ingredients that are inexpensive and effective. Protein treatments can even be done with eggs and mayo! Google it!

Also check stores like Ross and TJ Maxx for discount store brand products, I got my Yes To Tomatoes Conditioner for $2.99! It retails for $9-10 at Target! Again, check around and shop for products with the best ingredients within your budget. Always look through the clearance racks to see what has been marked down and stock up!

Natural products are healthier for everyone with less chemicals and synthetic allergens. I use mainly natural hair care products and I do not (I actually refuse) to spend more than $10 for any one product! I shop around and make a lot of products myself. Buying in bulk helps as well, I bought 1lb.of black soap for about $11-12 which is what some people charge for one bar. I have had that batch of black soap since November and it's just now reaching the half way point!

So, using simple and natural products can actually save your wallet, not break it.

Hope this helps!

What natural products do you use? Where do you get them? How much do they cost?

0 Be Featured: Natural Candice Johnson

I am Candice Johnson/Natural Dancer, facilitator of The Frizzness!

The Frizzness is a new site dedicated to embracing, nurturing & enjoying our natural beauty.  (thefrizzness.blogspot.com)

My Hairstory:
Well this has been a minute in the making! I was going to document my blissful layover into Transitionland last year which started off as optimistic, motivated, carefree and & oh-so inspired. Perusing the gorgeous Fotki pages of kinky-curly beauties, MySelf said: "Hey, we got this!" But suddenly, my kinks rode in on dry wave of reality! Even tumbleweeds would throw beverages at my moptop of tangles and dry knots like the New Directions kids on "Glee"!

Ok, maybe it wasn't THAT bad.

For months, I dutifully soaked up tips, facts, products and such like a sponge & all was alright in the natural-uverse & routine central....at first. Unfortunately, after a minute & a half of transitioning, my crown of glory didn't feel like playing nice anymore. Can you believe she actually wanted to box?! You know how even the cutest kids hit a certain age where adults compliment them on their clothes (or worse belongings) rather than anoint them as beautiful? Well, my hair looked like a regretful yearbook picture after five months. Didn't even look like my head anymore. I started stalking the beauty supply store in hopes of finding any relaxer I could to put this misbehavin' mane in time out! (Not a shining moment; I hold my head in shame).

As a dancer who spends an obsene amount of time in the public eye, I have to always keep my hair looking it's best. And in spite of all my efforts, I STILL ended up with a frizzy whatchamadoodle on top of my head until I learned how to slap some water and moisturizer on it generously. It wasn't even until month nine that I finally achieved a slick bun, hallelujah!!!! (Excuse me for one second while I shout. Insert your own music here.) Keep in mind I have now grown the nerve post BC to rock my curls/coils in the ornery Texas heat while dancing/working up a sweat. The bigger it gets, the more I fall in love. Swoon.....

I transitioned for the long haul, finally throwing my straight ends the peace sign after 17 months because everyone thought my hair was already natural, lol! And now, almost all of my dancers (Ordered Steps Productions) are natural or transitioning, too! Rockin' ruff & stuff with our curly puffs, aye!

So I'm sitting at three months 100 percent au naturale - and I LOVE it! Did I want a second date after my BC? Uummmm...NO. I almost tatooed "What did I just do?" across my forehead when my curly hubby gave my frizz & frack the side eye. In silence. BUT I've learned to manage it (detangling - a breeze), keep it moisturized, haven't touched it with heat in a year, & trying new things until I find my oasis. But I know I'm headed in the right direction because Hubbs said he couldn't see in the car past my fro, lol! I'm very tightly coiled, and have learned to love the little darlings. Shrinkage, however, still gets the eye roll from me but maybe I'll get used to that too.

And why did I go natural in the first place? I ALWAYS swooned over natural hair...but never knew I could have my own crowning glory. And to think I wore a jheri curl!

Be Blessed!
