I know here at DIY Hair Care Blog, we like to...D I Y (do it yourself) but, sometimes some of us like to go out and let someone else handle our natural manes. That's fine but, if you don't ask the right questions the end result can be disastrous. So, what exactly do you need to ask your stylist to figure out whether or not they can help you achieve longer, healthier natural hair?
Salon Checklist:
- What products will they be using? Always ask what brand of products they will be using. Read reviews online and research the ingredients. Salon quality doesn't equal mean it's great for your hair. If the ingredients don't seem to be a great fit for your hair, ask if you can bring your own products.
- Do they have experience dealing with YOUR hair texture? If you're going into the salon with unruly tangled hair, you need to make sure the stylist is experienced in dealing with your texture of hair. Be sure to check and make sure they have dealt with tightly coiled, curly, kinky hair. Some stylists know how to deal with loosely curly hair but, anything past that is pretty much a guessing game.
- What is the word around town? Talk to the other customers in the salon. Look at their hair. If they whisper some not so nice things to you or have chewed up hair and have been getting their hair done there for years...keep it moving. Always check customer reviews and any drama should be a red flag.
- How knowledgeable are they about caring for natural hair? Ask them questions. Don't be afraid. If they want your business they will speak with you. After all it's YOUR hair. If they mess up your hair, who is going to be walking around with chewed up hair? Not them, you are. So, make sure they know their stuff. Don't be rude or condescending though, that's never okay.
- How is the atmosphere? Go there on a Saturday and see how they handle clients. Are people waiting for hours? Do they gossip? Are they listening to the customers needs? Does someone greet you at the door?
Here are some sample questions you can ask them.
- How do they detangle curly hair? (You can use the excuse that you're tender headed)
- Do they shampoo in sections? Do they shampoo before or after detangling?
- Do you have to sit under the dryer? If so, do they dry your hair in stretched sections? (or braids, twists, etc.) You don't want them to sit you under the dryer with all your hair out...you will have a dry, frizzy, shrunken, tangled.....mess.
- How many degrees is the flat iron? Anything above 375 for certain hair types WILL damage the curl pattern over time.
- How hot is the blow dryer?
- Do they use heat protectants?
- Can they braid neat without snatching up all your edges?
- Do they have a gel that does not contain alcohol? (most commercial gels can be VERY drying)
Ask the questions that apply to you. Overall, you want them to handle your hair with as much care as your do. You want to make sure they know how to help your hair not damage it.
Any stylist worth paying will gladly answer these questions and more.
