With so many companies creating "must have" haircare tools, it's hard to figure out what you actually need to get in the beginning of your haircare journey. Here is a quick checklist you can take to the store with you to help you decide what you need and what can stay on the shelf.
Wide tooth comb- This is a must have for curly hair. Your average beauty supply comb, will work, in my opinion. Just don't go too wide or your may not get all the tangles out, try to stay in the middle.
Butterfly clips- These are great for keeping your hair in sections while you detangle.
Hairtwisties- Another great tool for keeping your hair separated and for buns. Make sure they don't have the metal clasp, those can pull your hair out.
Shower caps- Great for deep conditioning, baggy-ing and steaming. I find that the regular clear plastic caps work fine. If I need extra heat, I just throw a towel on my head over the cap.
Hair trapper- If you detangle in the shower, these will help keep your hair from clogging up the drain.
Bobby pins- Essential for styling. Make sure they are of great quality and have both prongs on the ends to keep them from snagging your hair.
Scarf/ bonnet- It doesn't have to be satin but, it can't be cotton. Whatever you use to tie your hair down at night needs to be non-absorbent, so that it doesn't suck the moisture out of your hair. Your scarf also needs to be long enough to cover your ends. Sleeping with your ends protected helps guard against splits.
You should be able to get all of these tools from your local Wal-Mart or Dollar General for under $20.
