Honey, which is readily available in most grocery stores, is very beneficial to hair. Learn how to get shine, moisture and reduce frizz with a simple honey rinse. You will see the difference in your hair after the first wash with this amazing humectant.
I have very curly hair which is prone to frizz. It can be hard to retain moisture and keep my curls looking lively. Honey is helpful because it is a humectant. A humectant is a substance that attracts and holds moisture from the air or environment. This is especially beneficial when used in hair care to add moisture to dry, thirsty strands.
The best ways to use honey is as a deep condition or a rinse. You can use honey alone as a gel substitute but, for some this results in dry, sticky hair due to the lack of water present.
How to use honey as a quick conditioner rinse:
1. Section your hair into 2-4 sections. You can do more sections if needed; this depends on the length and thickness of your hair.
2. In the shower or under a faucet, take down one section of hair. While tilting your head in the direction of the stream of water, gently smooth the hair between your hands. {like a hair sandwich, with the hair being the meat and your hands the bread} Do this until your hair starts to feel smooth and fully saturated.
3. Pour 2 tablespoons {about a palmful} of honey into your hand and gently rub this into your hand. Use the same “sandwich technique” mentioned above to fully saturate your hair with the honey.
4. After your hair is fully saturated pin the hair up and proceed to do the other section(s).
5. Once your whole head is complete, rinse hair thoroughly. Let the water do that work, just hold your hair under the stream. The honey will rinse out very easily.
6. To reduce frizz, use an old t-shirt to dry your hair. This is called “plopping” and keeps the curls clumped together and keeps frizz at bay.
How to deep condition with honey:
1. Dampen hair with water.
2. You can use honey alone or add in equal parts of oils or conditioner. Use about ¼ cup of honey and equal parts of any additions you choose.
3. Put on a shower or heating cap and let the mixture soak in for 15-20 minutes. You can use a hair dryer to accelerate the process but, it is not necessary.
4. Rinse hair and wash as usual.
*Note: Honey can lighten hair color over time, so keep this in mind.
Be sure to use quality honey. Honey straight from a bee farm is best. Quality honey is dark and should crystallize when cold.
