0 How To Make Whipped Shea Butter, Formulating A Recipe

Making Whipped Shea Butter isn't always as easy as 1,2,3. To understand how to formulate your own recipes, you need to decide how your are going to be using the Whipped Shea Butter.  You will also need to have a basic understanding of how certain carrier oils work.

Whipped Shea Butters, are mainly heavy body cremes that you can use to moisturize your skin or hair. Since, most Whipped Shea Butters, do not contain water, there is no need for a preservative. If you add water, extracts or any juices such as Aloe Vera Juice, you need to use a synthetic preservative in your mix.

Now, on to choosing the oils for our mix! You may be thinking, why add any oil at all? Can't you just whip the shea butter alone? You can use shea butter alone but, keep in mind that most authentic shea butters, don't provide much shine and don't have much glide. I relate it to the feeling of beeswax, without the waxy coating. Adding carrier oils help make applying the shea butter easier and also gives added benefits to the hair and/or skin.

Coconut oil- This oil helps provide, shine and moisture. For a lot of people coconut oil alone just sits on the top of their hair and gives their hair a greasy feeling. Remember- Since this oil melts very easily, the more you add to your mixture the softer your end mixture will be.
Sweet Almond Oil- This oil provides shine and is very light. It does not moisturize, as it doesn't penetrate the hair very much. Great oil for skin and hair.(Benefits of Sweet Almond Oil)
Olive Oil- This oil to me, is very heavy. I personally do not like it in butters for my skin and use it in small amounts in butter for my hair. This oil adds a large amount of shine and is also known to penetrate the hair shaft. Bear in mind that this oil can leave the hair or skin feeling greasy or weighed down so use sparingly.
Castor Oil- This oil is a humectant, it aids in adding moisture to the hair shaft. This oil is best used in hair butters as it can be a bit sticky and hard to smooth onto the skin. Be careful, if you live in a dry climate, since this oil takes moisture from the air and adds it to your hair, if there is no moisture in the air...well you may end up with dry hair.
Avocado Oil- This is a light oil, that can penetrate the hair shaft. It adds shine to the hair and skin. This oils has a lot of benefits to the hair and skin. (Benefits of Avocado Oil)

Other oils you can pick from are Safflower, Sunflower, Babassu, Apricot Kernel, Emu and many other oils!

0 My Twist Out Success!

After I washed shampooed and conditioned my hair Sunday night, I decided to try for a twist out. I had Naptural85's tutorial in my mind.

Products Used:
Diluted Jane Carter Revitalizing Leave-In
Moisturizing Hair and Body Lotion
Shealoe Mix (recipe)

I did one flat twist in the front of my hair to make a nice sideways part and just did two strand twists throughout the rest of my hair. I had about 12-14 twists total when I was done.Woke up on Monday and untwisted with Olive Oil. That's it!

I haven't reapplied any leave-ins or anything to my hair since Monday morning when I took the twists down with Olive Oil. When I shower in the morning, I "rehydrate" my hair by letting the midst from the shower and the humidity get to it. Cheap steam treatment!

How my twist out looks today (Wednesday):

I am loving it! Big hair! I am going to let it "grow" until Sunday when I wash my hair again! If I don't have to re-moisturize my hair until wash day, I am going to be one joyful camper! This hair lotion is awesome!

If you do a twist out and want it to stay defined, just keep it covered when you shower or re-twist it every night to keep frizz at bay.

What do you use to get awesome lasting twist outs?

0 Where to Purchase Ingredients

When I starting trying to make my own hair care and skin care products at home, I spent hours trying find the cheapest best quality ingredients. Well, I going to save you the hassle and let you know where you can look to get the ingredients you need to make your own hair care and skin care products!

Bramble Berry-I have ordered from this site, I do like their prices and they offer great quality products. Dislike: They use FedEx and FedEx takes up to 5-7 days to deliver. So, if you need a quick turnaround, this may be a problem.
  • Fragrance oils- they have the best reviews online for their fragrance oils, smell true to description.
  • Preservatives
  • Emulsifiers/Wax
Coastal Scents -Quick shipping (2-3 days) and great prices. Also, if you order $40 or more you get free shipping! Dislike: They don't have dependable stock. A lot of items were out of stock often.
  • Butters- Shea butter & cocoa butter
  • Carrier Oils (sweet almond, coconut, etc.)
  • Black Soap
  • Containers
From Nature With Love
(Haven't ordered from them but they get great reviews online via soap forums and such)

Mountain Rose Herbs - Great company with great prices! They have a nice catalog with lots of invaluable info. They give thorough details about each herb and essential oil. The shipping does take a bit longer though, you will be waiting about 7 days for your order. Dislike: Order processing, it took about 3 days for one of my orders to even process before shipping.
  • Herbs
  • Carrier Oils
  • Butters
  • Essential Oils
Essential Wholesale - Great company to order from. Prices are awesome and the shipping is quick. I got a few orders within 2 days! Shipping prices can be a bit expensive but, they're reasonable.
  • Product bases
  • Carrier Oils
  • Butters
Midwest Bottles - Quick shipping and awesome prices! They also pair the containers with the tops, so you don't have to guess! The shipping prices are reasonable they ship quick! Orders are also processed quickly, I received my notices the same day for a few orders. Dislike: Their stock isn't reliable. What you see one day you may not see instock the next day.
  • Bottles
  • Jars
  • Dispensers
  • Packaging
DIY Hair Care Products :)- I love this company (of course b/c I own it, right?)
  • Shea Butter
  • Herbs
