0 Haircuts Hair Styles
Some other great hair products that you may want to consider in your hair makeover are those products that work on the root of the hair and Healthy Hair Plus as well Nioxin both work on this with just about every product except the styling products that they manufacture. Products such as Root Food by Healthy Hair Plus and Vitamin shampoo as well as Hair Nutrition vitamins all work on feeding the root the nutrition that it needs to get hair healthy again and for many that is the key to getting rid of frizz. So many people think that hair frizz and split ends are just a hair problem but many times it is a root problem with the root not getting enough nutrition to sustain healthy growth and that will cause the hair to be much more fragile as it grows out of the scalp or medulla of the hair.

0 Short Hair Styles Boys
Growing out a short hair style can be one of the most frustrating and confidence zapping processes a girl can go through, I once heard that 70% of a girl’s confidence comes from her hair. Thus growing out a short hair cut over a period of a year can mean 365 bad hair days. As a hair guru this is one of the most common problems I face and I have to admit I have gone through this process myself, having gone from having a funky short hair cut that everyone loved, to looking like a prison escapee as the months of growing out progressed.

0 Be an informed shopper.... I am learning!!
Lately, A LOT of natural haircare "gurus" (I use that term extremely lightly) have taken to advertising products that they claim are "made by hand". I was scrolling a particular forum and and found some information that really makes me want to be a more aware shopper.
Natural haircare and body products seem to be taking over, they are popping up everywhere and everyone has a "product line". I don't like to spend more money then I have to. Check these sites out and make sure you're not paying more than you have to either.
Examples:

0 5 Things I can't live without- skincare
I like to keep things simple. I don't like a lot of clutter and junk everywhere. If I buy it, I plan to use it. I hate wasting money. (shouldn't we all?) When I find something I like, I stick with it. Sometimes I look at what I have and think "That's ALOT!!!" but, I know compared to most women I am not even on the "product junkie" scale. So here are 5 things I can't live with out when it comes to skincare.
*Bath and Body Works Juniper Breeze Body Lotion- I love this stuff!! I love the smell! I have went through atleast 5 bottles and am not tired of the smell yet. The lotion isn't very moisturizing but, the smell is amazing!! If I could get this in a gallon size container I would be in heaven!!
* Nubian Heritage Black Soap- This is honestly one of the best soaps I have ever tried. It moisturizes and can double as a shampoo. I have been using this soap exclusively for over 2 yrs. and don't plan on stopping any time soon.
* Bentonite Clay- I have a serious black head problem around my nose and nothing seems to get rid of them. When I use this clay it gets rid of the white heads and the black heads, I makes my face feel so clean. I like that I can feel it "sucking" the dirt out of my skin.
* Shea butter- I use this when my skin is really dry. We take a lot of family trips to Texas and that place seems to suck the moisture out of everything! Shea butter is great for your body and hair.
And last but not least...
* Baking soda- Baking soda? Yes. Baking soda. I love scrubbing my face with baking soda after being out in the hot sun or whenever my face feels dirty.
See, told you I like to keep it simple! All of these items are less than $10 a piece and all but, one are completely natural.

0 Keep it simple!! Haircare tips!!
Sometimes too much knowledge can get over whelming and confusing. This is something that seems to be occurring in the haircare community. As many of us learn how to take better care of our hair we look to forums, youtube, and blogs. There is a plethora of haircare knowledge sweeping the web and just recently, bookstores. There seems to be a lot of product junkies still struggling with their hair and a lot of women that think "natural hair is hard to take care of" not true at all.
Here is a great youtube video by "msvcharles" about how simple taking care of your hair can be. I agree with her completely, it doesn't take much at all to take are of your hair.
Checklist:
1. Shampoo- if you use an "all natural" soap to wash your body, try it on your hair and see how your hair reacts. I use Nubian Heritage soaps for my body and surprisingly they also work well for my hair.
2. Conditioner- I use the Giovanni line. I honestly think it you figure out what your hair needs this is a simple choice. Dry, itchy scalp? Get a conditioner with tea tree oil. Slow hair growth? Try one with peppermint. Read reviews and narrow it down to 2 or 3 companies.
3. Leave-In conditioner- You need your leave-in to moisturize so, you need to look for water as the first ingredient. If you feel like you can't find a leave-in you like, try a water and vegetable glycerin mix (50/50). Water and glycerin are usually the first 2 ingredients in most leave-ins.
4. Sealant/oil: Your options are endless here. You can use shea butter, mango butter, avocado oil, olive oil, coconut oil, vitamin e oil, the list is endless. Some oils are lighter than others and even penetrate the hair shaft to moisturize (coconut oil).
5. Gel- This is optional. You can even make your own gel with flax seeds or use aloe vera gel.
This is just a starter list. Of course you will need to do your research and find out what your hair likes.
One thing I will suggest is making sure you are not sending you hair on a PH roller coaster ride as Kimmaytube calls it. Here is her video on this: PH Balance. This is something I suggest being aware of when you start mixing ingredients and using "homemade" hair recipes. Just because it is natural doesn't mean it is great for our hair.
Also, the products found in the stores are usually already tested for PH, this is why most companies suggest you use their shampoo along with their conditioner.
Remember, women have been growing their hair since the beginning of time and they didn't have all these product lines, they kept it simple.

0 Mama Cloth Review coming soon! Gem Cloth
I get to update my "Green List" because I will be trying mama cloth in a few weeks. I have already ordered and received my pads, I am just waiting on "The Aunt" to come back. I placed my order with Gem Cloth.
Customer Service: Nice. She answered my questions within 24hrs. and went out of her way to make sure I was comfortable with my purchase.
Delivery: Quick. I ordered them on a Saturday night and received them on that following Wednesday.
Packaging: Nice. Everything was tied together with a cute bow.
Was it as described? Yes. The product I received looked as it was described on her website.
I have not used the pads yet but, I have washed and dried them and they looked and felt exactly like they did when she sent them to me. No shrinking and the colors didn't bleed.
*Make sure you read her site in it's entirety. Start here
*She uses fleece on the outside of the pad (the backing, the part that touches the underwear) and that fleece may or may not match your actual pad colors. This is something I did not know and was shocked to see when I got my pads but, after I contacted her she explained why it was like that.
You should try out some cloth menstrual pads- "Mama Cloth" when you can. It saves you money and they are so soft!!
Aren't these pads gorgeous?! |

Her prices are very reasonable and she has great feedback. I can't wait to try these pads out; I am sure I will be ordering more. I ordered out of the clearance section and I received 6 pads (3 heavy 3 regular) for $25 shipping included in pricing.

0 SAHM/WAHM burnout: Is it possible to do too much?
Being a stay at home mother is a hard job, when you're doing it half right. (meaning you actually clean your house and take care of your children) But, one subject that isn't touched on often is the SAHM/WAHM burnout. SAHM/WAHM burnout is when a mother takes on too much; too many playdates, too many chores, and doesn't take any time for herself.
Contrary to popular belief among moms, it is possible to try to do too much. Everyone doesn't have the same stamina (?) lemme think of another word.... values (?) whatever the word is, what I'm trying to say is we all can't do what everyone else is doing. We all can't have 3 children and be sane, we all can't have a 5 bedroom house and keep every room spick and span. We have to know our limits (yes, that's the word!).
You have to figure out what you can handle as a mother and wife. For some moms being a stay at home mom is enough to keep them busy and occupied and they don't need to start a business or volunteer lots of time outside of the home.
Get where this is going?
I find that a lot of mothers get depressed or burnout when they think they can "do it all" only to find out that they can't. We aren't superwomen! We aren't supermommies (I hate that term!)! We spend so much time comparing what we do with what others do and seeing if it measures up; stop it! Don't compare yourself to others!
"Marsha does Bible study, playdates and hosts parties!"
So? Does that mean you should try to do all that too? No! Do what you can and make sure you're doing THAT to the best of your ability. If all you do is clean the house, cook, and take care of little Sprout; great! Do that with all your might, that's a lot of work too!!

0 I'm all late with this topic but Afroveda!!!
So, there has been much ado about Afroveda raising their prices... Click Here and here and here for some opinions on the situation.
Now, for those of you who have never heard of Afroveda, it is a WAHM owned business that makes natural haircare products, website here.
What has everyone in such a huff? The fact that they raised their prices not a few cents or even dollars but, 100% increases! Yes. Products that were in the tens of dollars are now $30 plus. The reason the company stated they had to increase the prices was because of the increase in the cost of the raw materials they were using.
My thoughts?
Dang!!! 100% increase? And no warning? I don't care about the "why" she did it, I just can't believe she did it. I don't care to question her business, it's just that as a business owner you should have all your ducks in a row BEFORE you put your product on the market. Now, I know we all make mistakes (I did as a WAHM) but, after you start gaining a loyal customer base, that has been buying your products for years, that is not the time to raise your prices 100%. Seriously?
I have never bought Afroveda products and never will because this type of business move is just bad business in my opinion. I understand a company can do what they want but, a customer (or future customer) can too.
That was a bold move to raise their prices 100% on some products when they have such a huge customer base. Whoever advised that plan needs to be fired. The motives behind raising the prices seems shady and at this moment the best move seems to be to just close their doors all together. If they couldn't afford the materials they were using when they charged $12 then they definitely won't be able to afford them now with so many people pledging never to buy her products again.

0 Oil rinsing, what is it?
My hair had been really dry and since I had run out of my deep conditioner, I think my hair was having withdrawals. Well, I stumbled upon a blog where a woman was talking about oil rinsing and how it had given her hair shine and moisture. She showed before and after pics of her hair in a bun and the difference was amazing!!! (Blog)
Here is a thread @ Naturally Curly about it: Oil Rinsing
A post @ Newly Natural: Oil Rinsing
Blog I found out about it on "Textured Playground": Super Slick Bun
Here are the steps "Newly Natural" used:
Oil rinsing is essentially washing your hair with oil before applying your conditioner. I have found that occasionally oil rinsing allows my hair to detangle easier and it also softens it up. To oil rinse, simply do the following:
1. Wash or Rinse hair
2. Apply oil of choice from root to tip.
3. Rinse hair.
4. Apply conditioner and continue as you normally would.
My favorite oil to use for oil rinses is olive oil. It’s nice and thick and goes on easy. It’s way too heavy for me to use on my hair after washing, but perfect for my oil rinses. You can use any oil you like, though.
Here is where my "homemade" method differed....
I didn't want to use it before I shampooed because the shampoo I use is actually very moisturising. (does that make sense? I didn't need the moisture in that step, I needed moisture AFTER the conditioner and before the leave-in)
So what I do is this:
I give oil- rinsing a thumbs up in my book and will continue doing it throughout the Winter when I take out my protective style (more on that later...whew...).
Try both methods and let me know which one works for you!!

So what I do is this:
- Shampoo hair in sections and rinse thoroughly.
- Apply conditioner and rinse.
- Apply a light oil to whole head. I used Castor oil for 2 days and then used coconut oil until I shampooed again.
- Rinsed the oil out. I rinsed about 50% of the oil out.
- Then I applied a light handed amount of coconut oil and bunned my hair while soaking wet.
I give oil- rinsing a thumbs up in my book and will continue doing it throughout the Winter when I take out my protective style (more on that later...whew...).
Try both methods and let me know which one works for you!!

0 Dress attire when going out...does it matter?
I was reading on Opinionated Mamas (great blog) and they were discussing whether or not it was important to dress "nice" when you leave the house.
Here is a snippet of her opinion:
"On facebook the other day I saw a post and it really bothered me...it was a post from a woman, about being in public and seeing another woman in her pajamas and slippers at the post office. The woman who posted wondered how woman can let themselves go out in public like that, and not fix themselves up before leaving the house. Saying that women should be women and look good when they go out.
Really? What does it matter? I am not the type of person to judge people. So I guess that is why it bothered me so much. Maybe the woman was having a bad day and didnt feel like getting dressed, maybe she had a loss in the family and was upset and when women get upset we don't feel like being pretty. There are so many different things that could have kept her in her pajamas, maybe she was having a lazy day. "
My opinion on this:
Being a mother doesn't mean I don't need to practice basic hygiene. I find that some moms (I have been guilty of this too) get into a rut and think it's okay not to shower for days and not fix our hair. That's not okay. If you don't have enough time in your day to even take a 15 minute shower and put on some clean clothes, you may need to re-arrange your day. I'm sorry but, if I had to choose between writing a blog post and washing my rump, I am going to wash my rump.
Being that I have a daughter, I want to teach her as well that taking of yourself is important. You need to shower, brush your teeth, wash your face and comb your hair every day. And I am not talking about doing this for others, I am talking about doing it for yourself. I feel so much better with clean clothes on and a fresh rump. Don't you?
Now, everyone is going to have different opinions on what "dressed up" is but, to me, a clean t-shirt, some pants and sneakers is a nice outfit to wear out and about. As long as the clothes are clean and wrinkle free (don't iron? throw them in the dryer for a few minutes).
Now, I do agree that house slippers do not belong in the post office... a pair of flip flops would have been a better choice. I am not a fan of pajamas out of the house because it just shows that you haven't showered yet or freshened up.
